A serious accident in Bayonne, New Jersey left three children injured, including a baby that was pinned as a result of the crash. The car accident happened on Halloween night and the grandmother of the children injured decided to speak with the local news station about what transpired. The accident involved two vehicles at the intersection of 16th Street and Avenue C, which forced one vehicle to jump the curb and wind up on the sidewalk.
Details of the Crash
When the two cars collided in the intersection, it forced one of the vehicles to go onto the sidewalk, where it wound up traveling 75 feet before slamming into a garage. The victims of the crash were not in the car that went up onto the sidewalk but instead kids who were trick-or-treating with their grandmother. Two of her grandchildren were injured and a 17-year-old boy on the sidewalk was also injured. He was not related to the woman or the other children.
The grandmother said she and the children are too scared to go out at night anymore. She said that there won’t be any trick-or-treating next year. The car jumped onto the sidewalk and went right for the grandmother, her two grandchildren, another child family member, and the teen boy. The one-year-old, named Jake, was released from the hospital with some cuts on his face despite being pinned by the vehicle.
The cousin who was not injured in the crash said that the grandmother tried to get the baby out of the carriage and run when they spotted the car headed towards them but couldn’t get away fast enough. A resident of Bayonne said that the baby got pinned underneath the car as it was smoking. Her son-in-law turned off the car and rescued the child.
Another witness said that the baby’s face was covered in blood and the body appeared to be purple. The baby’s five-year-old brother is still in the hospital with injuries that have been listed as serious but stable. The teen injured in the accident was unconscious after the crash. He is in the hospital in stable condition after being transported in critical condition. The grandmother was not injured in the accident.
Both of the drivers stayed at the crash scene and both claimed that they had the green light at the intersection. There have yet to be any charges filed in the crash, which is still being investigated by the Bayonne Police Department and the Hudson County Regional Collision Unit. Authorities have not said if drugs, alcohol, or distracted driving played a role in the crash.
